Written and illustrated by William Steig, Doctor De Soto is an award-winning story that is highly praised by children and adults alike.

The story tells of the kind-hearted Doctor De Soto, a mouse who treats the toothaches of animals large and small. His expertise is so great that his fortunate patients never feel any pain. Because he's a mouse, the good doctor refuses to treat animals who have a taste for mice. But one day, a fox shows up and begs for relief from the tooth that's killing him. How can the kindhearted Doctor De Soto and his wife turn him away? How can they make sure that the fox doesn't eat them once his tooth is fixed? Those clever De Sotos will find a way!

Doctor De Soto is a 1982 New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of the Year. It is also a 1983 Newbery Honor Book.

    Great story!

This is a small paperback book. So, it may not have a long shelf life with younger children or if you find yourself reading it repeatedly. My 4 year old and two year old love this story. This book has made it into our frequently repeated cycle of books we read regularly. A mouse that outfoxes a fox -- definitely a classic!
