The BYOES Build-Your-Own EcoSystem is a semi-closed, do-it-yourself ecosystem. Simple to set up, this kit contains everything you need to make an exciting system. Simply provide a half liter of purified drinking water -- the rest is included in the kit!

This kit is a perfect blend of art and science and an incredible learning tool for the entire family. Active microorganisms, colorful marine shrimp, and algae live harmoniously inside this semi-closed system. It needs no maintenance; indirect sunlight is all it takes to keep this fascinating plant-and-animal display thriving.

The shrimp can live for years inside the BYOES. On average, expect 2 to 3 years; some live even longer. They require no feeding. Everything they need is inside the BYOES in the form of algae and bacteria. Please do not feed the shrimp as it may upset the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

This kit includes BioSticks™ that act as filters for shrimp waste. They are made with thousands of tiny holes for bacteria and break down waste into usable nutrients.
