A piñata is a brightly colored papier-mâché covering either a clay container or cardboard shape. It supposedly started with Chinese farmers that used similar objects to the piñata in ceremonies to ensure a fruitful harvest. Around the 16th century, Spanish missionaries introduced the piñata to the Aztec Indians in Mexico. In the ceremonies, the missionaries filled the piñatas with fruit, candy and coins to represent temptations as they tried to convert the Aztecs to Christianity.
Piñatas have become popular at birthday parties in Latin American and the United States. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors and are filled with candy, toys, confetti and more. At the party the piñata is suspended from a rope and children, usually blind folded, take turns hitting it with a stick until it breaks and treats falls out.
