This product is a huge family hit. It is easy to use, can be used by any age and provides great fun while kids wait for their icecream treat. The only downside with the younger ones is that it is heavy and absolutely must not be thrown, rolled to each other only. We had two younger children throwing it and one got a severe black eye from a missed catch.

First of all, you need a lot of supplies to make the ice cream. Second, you need a lot of time and it is almost impossible for a child to roll this enough to actually make ice cream. Just buy a real ice cream maker.

Comments about HearthSong Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker:
I bought this ice cream maker for my 9-year old daughter because she likes to do things with her hands and she loves ice cream. The ice cream maker is very durable and well-made and it does make ice cream but we had a problem with getting our ice to fit into the small opening. Our ice maker makes cubes that are 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" x 1", and we had to use a blender in the end to crush up the ice to get it to fit into the opening. We also used heavy cream instead of light cream and it worked well making the ice cream. My daughters and I had fun rolling the ball back and forth and it took a total of 20 minutes of rolling it around to get the finished product. The ice problem took longer than I anticipated so be aware of that.

Purchased this (smaller, blue one) last Christmas for my kids (ages 10 & 12). They love it!! It really works, and the ice cream tastes great!
I bought the smaller (blue) ice cream maker for my kids last Christmas (ages 10 & 12). They loved it! It really does work well. They either roll it or shake it. The ice cream tastes really good as well.

My granddaughter spent a full fifteen minutes rolling the ball and shaking it with me . . . and the ice cream was delicious and quick to make. Especially since I have memories of churning that crank on the old fashioned bucket-style ice cream churn.

Great purchase! We love our ice cream maker and look forward to using it more throughout the year. My children (ages 8 &3) love it, my husband and I love it, we are happy with it all around. Our ice cream was delicious (included recipe and you can alter it to make different flavors, etc) and we had a great time making it!!!!! Thumbs up!

Sounds GREAT but not all that

My 12 yr old daughter saw this in the catalog and just had to have it. Her little sister cooks in her "play" oven constantly and loves it, but my 12 year old is gluten intolerant and thought this would be an opportunity for her to "play" cook also. When she received it at Christmas, she immediately made her first batch of ice cream. The ice cream was very difficult to get out of the ball. She followed the chocolate ice cream recipe, but it honestly didn't taste that good. She hasn't asked to get it out again. Hopefully it will come out more this summer when we eat more cold treats.

Great fun for the entire family to include the dog that pushed the ball across the floor. Did not take much time to complete the process. Much faster than I had anticipated.

Great Unique Gift
from spokane, wa
I the ice cream maker ball to my nephews and nieces. At camp, niece had made ice cream in a plastic bag--tossing it around--didn't work too well. I remembered the ice cream ball in your catalogue. Sent it as a gift. They had a blast! They made a soy-based (healthy) soft ice cream using the strawberry flavor from your packet whicb turned out perfect. The family is close-knit and sports-minded -- and does a lot of church/community/neighborhood activities. So, this was greatly appreciated!

I would try to make only a pint/pint and a half instead of the whole quart. It would be faster and freeze better.

No play and freeze ice cream

Rolled the ice cream maker with my family and saw that it was leaking and had a crack in the plastic. Horrible product. Not durable at all!
My grandkids loved it !

Making the ice cream was a fun thing to do and eating the yummy results were even better! Great activity to do when young guests come over on a rainy day.

Fun to make and yummy ice cream
By Wendy the Momma
from Salida, CO
This is a great way to eat healthy ice cream with nothing but natural ingredients that you choose! The kids love rolling the ball, and no electricity is needed. The product seems to be sturdy and of good quality. The amount of ice cream the smaller ball makes is small, but just right for a family of four. Adding fresh fruit is delicious, especially in summer.

A friend had this at her house and it bacame a must for ours. We make ice cream together often, bringing the family together for fun and talking. A drawback to it is the cold plastic...little hands in this household complain and usually I end up rolling it the most.
