Dating as far back as 1851, advent calendars were created by Germans as a way to help families count down the days to Christmas. Other versions were the advent calendar, advent clock and advent candle (which is similar to an advent wreath). At first, these calendars only consisted of little pictures printed on cardboard, today they have taken on many shapes and forms, going from religious-themes to a more traditional Christmas. They’ve also evolved to have little doors that reveal whimsical pictures, toys, phrases from a classic Christmas story, Bible verses or little chocolates and candies.
