Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wash my playsilks?

We recommend hand washing with mild dish soap or shampoo, then hang to dry and iron on medium heat if you want to restore the shine. Little ones enjoy the tactile experience of wet silk--washing and hang drying their playsilks is a nice chore to include them in.

What kind of dyes do you use?

Our silks are dyed with Jaquard acid dyes and the solvent used to make them colorfast is white vinegar. All of our silks have passed safety testing for children of all ages.

What weight is your silk?

Our solid and and enchanted playsilks are 5 mm, which is light and airy. Our illustrated and watercolor playsilks, dress-ups, toys and baby blankets are 8 mm which is heavier weight silk, but still comfortable and breathable for little ones.

Why are your silks made in China?

Our silk is Habotai, an ancient product from China. We support the process of silk making because silk is biodegradable and, unlike most other fabrics, its production is actually healthy for the environment! Silk caterpillars eat mulberry leaves so farms have to grow lots of trees to produce silk, and the caterpillars are fed by hand on family farms. Pesticides or chemicals cannot be used while making silk, because the caterpillars are very sensitive, which means that the finished product is 100% natural. Silk making is an ancient tradition that is indigenous to China, and is still an important and celebrated process in Chinese culture today. We have had the pleasure of visiting the facilities where our silks are made, and meeting the skilled people who hand dye and hem our products in the village of Souzhou. Over the past twenty-five years we have cultivated positive working relationships with silk manufacturers in China, and we continue to feel positively about working with them and are confident that the individuals producing our products are being paid a fair and competitive wage.
